High Fructose Corn Syrup & Your Diet
High fructose corn syrup, HFCS, is a combination of glucose and fructose and is a thick syrup used in the food industry. There are several types of HFCS that differ mainly in the percentages of each sugar. The degree of sweetness is determined by a process using enzymes during manufacturing. There are many reasons to be familiar with HFCS because it’s used in processed foods and not only soft drinks and some juices.
A few quick examples of where HFCS is added: (Not all brands use HFCS)
- Soups
- Condiments
- Lunch meats
- Yogurt
- Meal bars such as for breakfast
- Cereals
- Breads
There has been a long-running battle between consumer and health advocates and certain industry organizations. On one side, there are allegations that HFCS is a dangerous additive implicated in major chronic diseases. Each side presents evidence, claims, and information to refute the other. This is why you should do your own reading and research so you’ll be informed.
If you’re not in the habit of reading food and drink labels, it’s time to start.
